The Cornwall Community Museum is now home to a plaque recognizing John Baker. Born to Dorinda, a slave owned by Major John Grey, John came to Cornwall with the Grey family, and was manumitted upon the death of Major Grey’s son Robert. He later served in the War of 1812, and returned to Cornwall and made it his home. He is buried at Anglican Church. The portrait of John was designed by local artist Tracy-Lynn Chisholm, in collaboration with the Loyalist Bridge Annex, the Ontario Black History Society.
