Community Event - Niagara - NSO Exhibit Opening at St. Catharines Museum

Join us as we welcome one of Niagara’s oldest cultural institutions to showcase some of its 70-plus year history at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.

Niagara Symphony Orchestra is curating a community exhibit in the museum’s lobby, titled “Blowing Our Own Horn: The NSO at 71”. The exhibit explores the history of the symphony, which has transitioned from a community orchestra established in 1948, to a professional ensemble. An opening reception to unveil the exhibit is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1.

The exhibit features several rarely seen artifacts and programs, including music scores, old photographs, and a mix of old instruments, as well as uniquely modern educational instruments. The artifacts will be displayed with information that helps tell the story of the symphony, which has entertained audiences for seven decades, but also engaged the local community through education outreach.

The opening reception, set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 1, will include performances by the Niagara Symphony Orchestra’s new Arts & Minds Wind Trio, featuring Doug Miller, Zoltan Kalman and Cathi MacDonnell. The trio will be performing excerpts from Postcards from a Blue Planet, a new work by Kevin Lau, the symphony’s composer in residence for 2018-2019. The afternoon begins with a few remarks and refreshments will be served.

We hope you will join us for an afternoon of history, musical entertainment, and a chance to celebrate an important contributor to Niagara’s cultural landscape. All are welcome.
